How do we make the car-share experience painless?

background

Are we there yet?

The goal of this project was to redesign primary flows of the Modo car sharing experience. The project addressed vital pain points along with a visual refresh for the app within an already established design language.

the problem

An un-refined and clunky car sharing experience

The problem with the app is that tasks take longer than they should. For instance, the Booking flow currently has 10 steps to complete a booking. Reporting an issue is 9 steps.

Market research

Start your engines

Services like Modo and Evo Car Share provided flexible and accessible transportation to a large demographic. Modo lacks a polished and cohesive app experience which presents an opportunity for an app redesign.

Market research

I came up with the following conclusions

Refined app navigation can help users quickly interact with sections they want.

Refining the Booking - Reporting - Ending/Extending flows present an opportunity to elevate the user experience while keeping Modo's core values intact.

Aesthetic information is evaluated immediately it is largely responsible for the user's first impressions (Tractinsky, Cokhavi, Kirschenbaum, & Sharifi, 2006).
The aged visual design of the app leaves a poor first impression.

Users study

Talking to them

To understand the pain points of car share users, I interviewed 1 Evo and 1 Modo user to create a framework with which to begin the redesign as well put my own biases as a Modo user into perspective.

Users study

I came up with the following conclusions

I arrived at two goal-directed personas. The users of the Modo app may have similar goals of booking a car, but their motivations, needs and expectations may vary greatly

Modo member that needs a car now vs. a member that needs a car a few days from now. How to address urgent and gradual user needs?

Managing past, current and future trips is a vital part of a car sharing experience.

the value

So, where to?

The goal of this project is not to reinvent the Modo car share experience, it is to refine it. The guiding values for the redesign were Versatile, Simplified and Enhanced.

solutions

Always on a familiar road

Onboarding

Progressive onboarding to orient users to the main screen of the app, to help them find their way ahead quicker.

Navigation Bar

Taking into account larger screens, having interactions within reach is important. Quickly access all the important and relevant screens through a Bottom Navigation Bar.

Simplify

Show the user information that is relevant to help them make decisions faster. Consolidate sections together to reduce number of screens.

Booking

Simplified booking experience without taking away any important details. Less steps to get them on the road quicker.

Reporting

Users are on the go, in an underground car park without cell reception or in a hurry. Draft reports with pictures to submit later. Prioritise a smooth experience when they pick up a car.
